On 2 December 2026, the UAE celebrates its 55th National Day — Eid Al Etihad. With the holiday falling on Wednesday and Thursday, many residents will get a long break, and every brand in the country will post something.
Most of it will look the same: a flag, a falcon, “Happy National Day” and a discount code. Here’s how to do better — and how to avoid the mistakes that can turn a celebration post into a compliance problem.
First, the rules: national symbols aren’t a design asset
This is general information, not legal advice. Check current guidance from the National Media Authority and the UAE flag guidelines, and take advice for anything you’re unsure about.
- No flag in commercial advertising. The UAE flag guidelines state the flag may not be used for commercial purposes, as a trademark or in promotional material. It also must not be printed on disposable items or food, or used as decoration.
- Don’t alter it. The flag’s proportions, shape and colours must not be changed to fit a product or design.
- Serious penalties. Under Federal Law No. 13 of 2019, insulting or desecrating the flag can bring heavy fines and imprisonment.
- No AI images of national symbols or leaders. The National Media Authority has warned that generating images or videos of national symbols or public figures with AI, without prior official approval, violates media content standards.
- Respect national dress. The National Media Authority has moved to reserve Emirati national dress in commercial content for Emirati citizens.
The good news: you can celebrate beautifully without any of these. The national colours used tastefully, the number 55, local heritage, and real people are all fair game.
